  • Were you in a band with me at some point and I've forgotten all about it? Refresh my memory.

Note: I only count musical ensembles that had at least one public performance or that made a recording. If I played in your living room and we talked about having a band, but never did, then that doesn't count.

Possibly due to the relatively large number of bands in this list, I've occasionally been characterized as a "band hopper". In my defense, here are summaries of how my association with certain bands came to an end.

  • Beach-Head/Drifter Goat: Everyone went to college in different places. Band dissolved.
  • Sons of Earth: Eric quit after almost two years. Band dissolved.
  • Smilin' Joe Fission: Band reorganized into The Gerbils.
  • Buck Price: George quit after almost two years. Band dissolved.
  • Neutral Milk Hotel: I was a temporary sideman.
  • Alice's Children: Disorganization resulting from mismanagement. Death of key personnel.
  • The Gerbils: Band moved out of state while I finished college.
  • The Third Eye/Gland: I eventually rotated out of the revolving cast. I take credit for this one.
  • Clay Bears: Jeff moved away from Ruston for, like, the 25th time.
  • GoFigure: Okay. This one I did quit. The music was godawful.
  • Midget & Hairs: I was a temporary sideman.
  • Squint: I was sitting in for a couple of months while Timmy had a broken hand.
  • By June: My doing again. I ended this project in order to start up a rock project.
  • Teddy Bear Satan: Never broke up. We just play very rarely.
  • Ross Beach & the She-Devils: Key personnel moved out of state. Band dissolved.
  • Spotty Knickers: A one-show Beatles tribute band.
  • Spacecats: A one-show Robyn Hitchcock tribute band.

  • So, to be fair, I only hopped away from three of these bands. The rest were temporary by design or situations beyond my control. Not too shabby for a 14 year stretch of time, don't you think?
Anyway, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. -Ross
